Insights into the world of the Old Kent Road Tesco
Much discussed and complained about in our forum, this Yahoo! technology piece has some interesting insights:
"The 45,000 square-foot Southwark Tesco is a "support store" -- it's given extra management resources because it operates in one of the more deprived areas of London, and it certainly has its own idiosyncracies.
"Some of the advertising is in Spanish, for example, to cater for the large local Latin American population. And of the 200 applicants for each job there, half are rejected on the grounds that they don't have a UK work visa.
"The store, located in the former London "territory" of notorious gangsters the Kray twins, doesn't open all night for security reasons. But [the manager] Williamson's background in Britain's elite Parachute Regiment means he's not too concerned.
