Phone box demolished by a bus

A couple of weeks ago we noticed this uprooted phone box in Blackfriars Road, just across the road from the offices of Bankside Press.

That was on Monday morning. By early evening the box had been removed and the base covered in tarmac.

All was explained in the Evening Standard the following Friday, when this contribution from Jeff Lahey of Camberwell appeared in the paper's Protest column:

"I was on a bus on Blackfriars Road when I felt a jolt, before we came to a stop. I got out to take a look, and there was a pay-phone booth smashed to the ground. The driver got out to see what had happened and exclaimed that it was not his fault.

"As I stood looking at the phone box, the driver asked me if I wanted to get back on the bus or not. I asked if he was going to call anyone and he replied "Why? It's not my phone." I sent an email to TfL describing the situation but I have not yet had a response."
